On the Streets
Swarming or Street Attacks
Another area that many have a concern for are attacks from small gangs of people on the streets, in parking lots, and other isolated places. This type of attack usually involves male teenagers or young men who corner another male to either bully them, rough them up or rob them. If they turn their attention to a woman, it is usually to engage in some other form of assault. Today, this type of attack is also referred to as "swarming."
Men and women of all ages and social backgrounds can be the victims of a swarming or street attack. Men have often been associated with such attack but recent reports in various countries cite a rise in teenaged girls or young women engaging in swarming attacks and other forms of violence such as overt and covert aggression, direct and indirect violence, or physical and social bullying1. The study cited explains that the causes for this rise widely range from behaviour disorders, to gender issues, to experiences with abuse, drugs, mental illness among many.
